Gangsta Rap Thursday - October 27, 2011

I was surfing the radio dial as I was driving home from work yesterday and was having a hard time finding anything that I liked. Station after station, it was a bunch of junk. Then things got worse, one station was playing Jethro Tull. I can't stand Jethro Tull. Let me give you some back story, in 1988 the Grammy's decided they were going to give a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance starting in 1989, good idea. The first set of nominees included AC/DC, Iggy Pop, Jane's Addiction, Metallica, and Jethro Tull. If you look at that list, it's pretty obvious who stands out and is deserving of Best Metal Artist. AC/DC is a great band, more hard rock than metal, but worthy enough, they rock. Iggy Pop a pioneer of what he does and probably most worthy of a lift time achievement award. Ditto for Jane's Addiction, not metal, but looking at what they've done (remember that little festival they kicked off? Lollapalooza?) they helped set the wheels in motion for the whole alternative scene of the '90's. Metallica, they are metal personified, there shouldn't even be a Grammy for Best Metal Performance, they should just let Metallica show up each year and rock the house. There should be a Grammy category named Metallica and each year it should be awarded to Metallica. (Those are just my personal feelings). And finally to round out that list there's the band least likely to win the award, Jethro Tull, they have a stinkin' flute player for crying out loud. Most definitely not metal. The only other flute players that are well known are Yanni and Pan, the goat boy whose flute Yanni stole. The flute is so ridiculous that Will Ferrel played one in Ron Burgundy, the same character who thought San Diego was a German term played the flute a la Jethro Tull.

So, with all this being said, who won the first Grammy for Best Metal Performance? Jethro Tull. That's wrong in so many ways I can't even start to list them, they won't fit on the Internet. I'd break it and be hated the world over, almost as much as the entire fandom of metal hates Jethro Tull.

The good thing this little episode reminded me of though is this. Metallica recently collaborated with the legendary Lou Reed, quite an amazing team-up, kind of like Spiderman and Wolverine. What's even more cool about this match made in metal heaven? To promote the album they made a trailer for it, and it is stock filled with content from none other than Rampant. Check it.

So what's Gangsta about this all? C'mon it's Metallica, we're digging it and in fact we're starting up our own musical awards. The first of which goes to Metallica and Lou Reed. What the award is called, we don't know. What they get is our gratitude and an affirmative nod as being awesome.

Gangsta Rap Thursday - October 20, 2011

It's the middle of October and in the sports world that's a mighty fine thing. The World Series is happening, the NFL is in full swing, NCAA football is at it's midpoint, NCAA basketball is getting ready to warm up with preseason polls, and nobody cares about the NBA. In true gangsta fashion, what's the big story here? The NHL season has started. Say what? Some of you might be asking what does the NHL have to do with being Gangsta? After all isn't it mostly filled with Canadians? (Please note Snow was a Canadian, as well as the Tragically Hip. Both have a lower Gangsta quotient than raking leaves.) Yes, the NHL is Gangsta. While the other entities in the sports world debate the arguments of opposing coaches and whether they should be settled by league judicial committees, the NHL gets it done on the ice. If two teams have a problem with each other, then it's taken care of, in the game. Not every battle is fought by a team's enforcer, some are taken care of by guys that play with a lot of heart and have the ability to get under their opponents skin. They are willing to do what it takes win the emotional battle and fire up their team and fan base. That's why this week on Gangsta Rap Thursday we're going to celebrate one of those guys who did it best. At 190 lbs. Matthew Barnaby wasn't considered a big man, but he played with more heart and a bigger mouth than most. He was a player you loved to have on your team and hated to play against. He's our favorite player (now an announcer/analyst) and he is truly gangsta.
